Washington D.C. Vacation 10 June 08-Mt. Vernon

We rode on this boat from Alexandria up the Potomac to view Mt. Vernon. After 45 min. we could see Mt.Vernon in the distance.

Once you dock, the captain points up the hill and tells you to have a good day and to be back at the dock by 4 P.M. We had no idea it would take all day to see the main house, the outbuildings the gardens, the museum, the farm and the outhouse. In 99 degree weather with 99%humidity we had a challenging day ahead of us.

Mom enjoying her vacation and taking the captain's place on the water taxi.

Starting the day with my styling bag from Heidi and sunglasses from Christy.

George called this the "Necessary House", it was made from beautiful cherry wood.

This is the back side of Mt.Vernon. The house is made from wood that is covered in sand and then painted white. Each room in the house was decorated in vibrant wall colors like bright blue, dark green with lots of carved and painted wood. There was a look and feeling of wealth throughout the house with big furniture, draperies and fancy feather beds, even the bed where George Washington died. They told us that lots of people would come and stay at the house just to be near the famous George Washington, and no one was ever turned away.

One of the outbuildings in the gardens. All the buildings are finished in the same style, white painted wood and red roofing.

Pretty gardens everywhere, both flower, shrubs and vegetable gardens

Fruit trees trained to grow horizontally along the fence. George was into inventive gardening.

A view of the Potomac from the front of Mt.Vernon.

More examples of the many gardens.

We took a walk from the house area across this bridge to the lower farming area.

This is a sixteen sided building George had built to grind his wheat.

Enjoying ourselves, sweating to death, proud to be invited to George Washington's home.

Very cool - the gardens look amazing - good idea to grow your fruit where you can actually reach it!
