Christy invited us down for "Parents Weekend." She really seemed to want us to come. I picked up this book in the Azle Library about places to visit in Austin. The first place we went was lunch. My book said, "The greatest hamburger you'll ever eat." It was at P.Terry's, and it had an old 50's drive[in atmosphere. You could drive-thru or go to the pick up window and then sit out at tables under the trees. I loved my veggie burger and Dad and Christy got cheeseburgers. Dad was pleased, but Christy said the burgers at the Malt Shop on the way to Weatherford were better.
Our next stop was The Cathedral of Junk. This was also in my book. Sorry I don't have any pictures, my batteries were dead. Anyway it was way cool and weird, just like they say Austin is. So go to google and type in Cathedral of Junk and see pictures or go to www.roadsideamerican.com/7816 and it tells all about the guy and his creations. We all liked this place. We climbed to the top and all through the mazes of junk. You see your possessions in a realistic view and most of it is junk or will soon be that.
Next Christy took us on a tour of the UT campus. Well, it wasn't the whole campus, just mainly where she attends classes. She also to us over to the bookstore and helped us pick out orange shirts that say, Longhorn MOM and Longhorn DAD. We posed together for a picture. I'm counting on Christy to post her pictures.
We parted ways because Christy had to get ready for a date. Dad and I went to search for the bats. My book said to find a certain bridge and then wait until dusk to see 1.5 million bats emerge from under the bridge. We waited with the crowd which formed and we saw a few and then we moved closer to the lake and I could see more. It was cool, but perhaps we were there in October and they say there are more in August. So, go to google and type in bats in Austin and you can see some pictures.
Afterwards, Dad and I went to Rudy's for some lean brisket and BBQ chicken. This time I really enjoyed the creamed corn and Dad said he could sit there all night and eat that lean meat.
The next morning we walked up the hill from Christy's dorm to the Institute Building for church. It was a good walk. Christy says she wears her flipflops and takes her nice church shoes. We enjoyed the meetings. Her Bishop is nice and very interested in each student. He told them to ,"Live you life on contract." In other words, remember your covenants made with God to live your life on earth and return to live with Him. The students did an excellent job conducting, giving lessons etc. We came away very impressed and felt good that Christy would be cared for and influenced positively as she participates there. We met several of her "Mormon" friends. They hang out alot together playing games, going places, eating together. She likes this very cute boy from Houston. He is an engineering major.
After lunch we left for home. We stopped in Round Rock for the Texas Donut, the one that is as big as your head. We enjoyed our trip to Austin. Christy wants you all to come down and see her.
